Pat Robersons's shameless media grab
Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson suggested Thursday that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke was divine punishment for "dividing God's land."

Of
course, were one inclined to argue this theologically, it could be said
that God kept the 70+ year, old 300+ pound Sharon healthy for a few
more years to negotiate the Israeli land settlement.
But I think
what is less obvious but worthy of note is that by making such a
statement, Pat Robertson manages to associate himself in the press
with the misfortune of a legitimate world leader....thus
attempting to portray himself as a person of equal importance.
And of course the press will give Roberson wide coverage because of the
audience drawing looneytoon factor.
It is reminiscent of when
Democratic convention star Barack Obama was challenged by a "no
chance in hell" right wingnut...one Alan Keys for the Illinois senate
race. Alan Keys actually moved into Illinois just to run against
him. Why? So that he could give weight to the idea that is
stature was somewhat equal to that of Barack Obama ... as a fellow
Black leader.
