Extend Cobra Coverage Now

As many of you know, the cost of purchasing non-group health insurance in the open market has absolutely skyrocketed!

For an individual, it can range as high as $10,000 per year and more than $20,000 per year for a family.  Amazingly, this is for very limited coverage.  The current situation has put middle and even upper-middle class families with unemployed breadwinners at unacceptable fiscal and physical risk which has never been seen before in this country in most of our lifetimes!

In this time of rampant unemployment with many people approaching the end of their COBRA coverage and already strapped for funds by a dismal job market, we simply do not understand why the federal government has not taken steps to significantly extend the amount of time that a laid off employee can remain on COBRA.

The entire premium of COBRA coverage is borne by the participant who also pays an administration fee to the sponsering company.  As such, there is no tax burden for the public, nor added cost to the formal employer.  COBRA coverage is not cheap but it is far better both in price and quality than purchasing Health Insurance in the open market.
